Common questions about solar in Melbourne

What paperwork is involved in a solar installation?

Grid-connected solar systems in Victoria generally need approval from your local electricity distributor before connection, and the electrical work must be certified by a licensed electrician. Your installer usually prepares and lodges this paperwork. A recent electricity bill is also useful, because it shows your meter details and how much power your property uses.

How much does a solar system cost?

The cost depends on the system size, the panels and inverter chosen, your roof and switchboard, and whether a battery is included. Government incentives may reduce the upfront price for eligible customers. The most reliable way to know is a quote based on your property and energy use.

How much roof space do I need for solar panels?

It depends on the system size you need and the wattage of the panels. Roof orientation, pitch and shading also affect where panels can be placed and how much they produce. A site assessment checks your usable roof area before a system is designed.

Can I add a battery to my solar system later?

In many cases, yes. Whether a battery can be added depends on your existing inverter, system configuration and switchboard. If you are planning a battery in future, mention it when you request a quote so the system can be designed with that in mind.

Will solar keep my power on during a blackout?

A standard grid-connected solar system without a battery is designed to switch off during a grid outage for safety. Some battery systems can supply backup power when installed with suitable backup equipment. How long backup lasts depends on the battery capacity and what you are running.

Are there solar rebates in Victoria?

As at October 2026, eligible Victorian households may be able to apply for a Solar Victoria solar panel rebate of up to $1,400, with an optional interest-free loan, subject to income, property value and other conditions. Rebates must be claimed through an authorised solar retailer. Eligible systems may also create federal small-scale technology certificates (STCs), which usually reduce the upfront price. Eligibility depends on your circumstances, so check solar.vic.gov.au for the current rules. This is general information, not eligibility advice.
